Styx or Boston

Which do you like better Styx or Boston??  After attending a concert on Friday night at the Family Arena in St. Charles, Missouri, I feel the need to ask this question.  I went to this concert thinking I like Boston but was very surprised to find out I had already missed most of the best part of the bands.

Due to circumstances beyond my control, we were late for the concert start time.  After arriving and getting our seats, it was apparent Styx plays music for the audience.  Everyone in the audience was swaying to the music, dancing and singing.  The members of the band were very fan friendly.  They put on a great show.  As Tom Shaw said goodbye, the stage was torn apart and set for Boston.

At this point, I am happy to be in the arena.  AND then it happens, they start to play....  Needless to say, after the first seemingly endless song, I am happy I have the earplug in my ears.  The music was way too loud!

All of those familiar songs only sounded familiar until the band started to sing.  They did not sound very good.  AND when did Boston ever have a girl play guitar in the band?

We eventually left, before the show was over.  I spied many empty seats after Styx left the stage and only after enduring about 45 minutes to an hour of "music" did I understand why.

Maybe Boston was having a bad day.  But then again maybe Styx is really just that good!  I was totally impressed with their performance.

I would go for Styx over Boston any day. I remember enjoying Styx a lot in my teenage years, but Boston never really hit me as anything special.

Frank,

I cannot tell you how disappointed I was.......

I saw Boston in concert wayyyyyyyyyyyy back in college.  They were horrible and they played Third Stage IN ORDER as it was on the lp.  I was disappointed!

Karl,

ME TOO!!  I learned the hard way.  My ears were ringing for a whole day.

15 years or so ago, I'm sure they both sounded a lot better - even live.  I'll take "Man in the Wilderness" over "More than a Feeling" anyday.  Too many of Boston's songs sounded the same.

Renee,

They have not changed much then.....I would classify them as horrible.  They played more for themselves than the audience.

Jim.

Styx truly put on a great show!  I was sad to have missed part of it.

Boston sounded the same.....and they went on and on until you were shouting for them to stop playing...;-)

I pick Styx for sure over Boston.  Boston is more of a studio band.

Sam,

I agree....

Boston was always an incredible studio band, Tom Scholz is an engineering wizard. However their sound was too clean to ever be replicated live, also they will never sound the same following lead singer Brad Delps suicide. Styx was awesome live or in studio, however they are not Styx without Dennis DeYoung.

Neil,

Styx is still awesome.  Tom Shaw is still as energetic as ever.

Ann, I loved Boston when I growing up, but my wife and I went to a Styx concert a couple of years ago and were blown away by the band, they did great! It would be a toss up in my book.

Duane,

Have you ever been to a Boston concert?  I had never been to see either band but let me tell you....Styx was awesome and Boston was horrible.  Boston should stick to studio sessions.  I thought I really liked them too....

It seemed as if they were not there for the fans.

Ann, no on the Boston concert, sure loved their 8-Tracks (aging myself) though. Loved Styx in concert though, very entertaining.

Duane,

I agree on the entertainment value of Styx!  Boston sounds good on those 8 tracks, eh?

Ann,

Oh I know the feeling.  Been to a few in my time to where I felt "WHY" did I stay and listen to that noise :).  Is it nice in St. Charles today?  I'm currently in Kuwait.  Temp should reach 125-130 today sometime.

Billy,

WOW!  That is way too hot.  It is warm here today but not nearly that HOT.  At least it is not raining today.  ;-)
