HELP! How Do You Deal With THIS???
My neighbors are not neighborly... They party into the wee hours of the morning. Yell, hoot and scream at all times in the night. They drink ALOT! But the sheriff's department says I should talk to them.
I wonder how am I supposed to reason with the drunk biligerent people who live next door? I have tried to be nice and make a friendly phone call before calling the police but they changed their phone number.
Now what? The police can/will do nothing. I have been threatened with "country justice". I have lost countless hours of sleep. And anyone who knows me, knows I need at least 3 or 4 good hours of sleepy time.
I need ideas on how to get these people to move or be quieter at the times my neighbors and I are trying to get some shut-eye.
What ever happened to the right to quiet enjoyment?

[But the sheriff's department says I should talk to them.]
Oh no! No noise ordinances or anything?
I'm gonna check back and see what people suggest. This sounds like a terrible situation.
First of all if you have any kind of positive relationship with them just talk to them. Explain it is the kids or what ever and you just need some quite. How often does it happen? Every once in a great while just try and live with it. If it is a horrible on going issue put a video camera up and record. Are they renters? Contact the landlord. You should be able to file a suit against the owner of the property and the inhabitants for a number of things. Keep that video tape.
I would call in during the day and ask to talk to the Captain of the police department and file a complaint. There has to be some sort of curfew in place. What do your other neighbors say?
When the police that respond tell you to talk to a bunch of drunks...they need reported...that is their job to maintain peace and quiet, not yours...JMHO.
Wow! THat's a tough one if the police are no help. When I moved into my house my street was like the wild west! Parties every night with carloads of people. The police took care of it.
You have to have some noise ordinance. Ask them to do something again.
Candice,
The sheriff's department is no help. It takes over an hour or more for them to show up and they really do nothing.
Ann
Gene,
I should have video taped last Saturday night. The harley motor revving at 12:15 was quite a rude awakening. There is not reasoning with these people. They do not care. They think because they live in the country ANYTHING goes. They have threatened me.
The parties happen nearly every weekend. If it was once in a while, I could/would deal with it.
I have parties too but they break up about 11 and we never stand outside and yell at each other!
Thank you for your suggestions,
Ann
Karen,
Thank you! I completely agree. IF I thought it would do ANY good, I would try to talk but I am not putting myself at risk on injury.
I will try calling the captain.
Thank you,
Ann
Lizette,
You must live in a very nice municipality.
Ann
Russ,
The sheriff's department give the impression they are inconvenienced by the calls for a peace disturbance.
I will keep calling,
Ann
Karen,
The other neighbors are mostly older and many have hearing issues. They think doing anything is not going to help. Of course they also say it is not right to keep us up all night!
Ann
Hi Ann. this is terrible behavior, by the Sheriff's Department! I can't believe that they are inconvenienced to come out to the party. Definitely call the Chief, and if that doesn't work, I would keep moving up the ladder--- County Commisssioners? Mayor?
I would try talking to them too, but not after they threatened me. Your neighbors have no right to threaten you either - you would think the Sheriff would respond to that.
I'm sorry Ann!
Mary,
The party last weekend went on until Sunday at 6 a.m. I think I got about 1 hour of sleep total and then I gave up...
Ann
Offer to sell their house free of commission - they'll never get such an offer again, and you may finally get a nights sleep! Thank goodness I live in a sleepy quiet town, I don't know what I'd do if the police wouldn't enforce by-laws over such blatantly illegal behaviour. My sympathies Ann.
Ann -
I think my ex-next-door-neighbors might live next door to you now!
Neighbor's kid left handprints on another kid's neck from trying to choke him (he was 9 or so at the time); dad kept shotgun, in full view, in unlocked car parked in driveway.
Every time my hubby went out to cut grass with electric mower, neighbor's kid would turn on hose and spray it over the fence at my husband.
Their illegal hot tub out back would make our kitchen floor vibrate every time they turned it on.
How we ended up getting kitchen curtains: I was standing at kitchen sink, peeling carrots, when I caught sight of neighbor's kid masturbating in his living room.
When I was pregnant w/our second child, neighbor came at me with a pair of scissors because she thought we'd called the homeowners association to complain about their 6 foot weeds in their backyard. I hardly ever lie, but when someone asks me a direct question while threatening me with a sharp implement, I am wont to be less than truthful.
One summer night at 1 AM neighbor came over, shirtless and slurring his words, cursing us out and accusing us of calling the cops on them for some late-night party they had (and we hadn't called the cops).....threatened to beat the crap out of my husband, etc. Hubby waited til the next day to go over there and give the Mr. a good and proper dressing down and told him do not darken our doorstep again throwing threats around or we WOULD call the police.
Turned out we didn't have to. Sheriff appeared at their door one day with foreclosure notice....happiest day of my life......till I learned, thru barking noises, that they had moved out leaving their 2 little dogs and a couple of cats in the house. Having been physically threatened by them before, and getting a gander at the Mr.'s shotgun in the backseat, I couldn't bring myself to be the one to call Animal Control.
Listing agent had to pay to move all their stuff which they left piled in garage. Holes were punched in walls throughout house. Poo everywhere. All flooring, including sub-flooring, had to be torn out and replaced. Activated lime (?) had to be applied through all the crawl spaces because of feces, etc.
I guess this is the long way of saying I feel your pain.....I'm sorry for what you're going through.....if I were you, I'd move.
If they want to party all night, perhaps you could try partying all day. You know, something for the kids. Try blasting Barney songs from your stereo all morning long.
Ann,
Maybe you could offer to find them 10 or more acres in the New Melle or far north Wentzville areas? And offer to list their home at a greatly reduced marketing fee......
Ann, I know how I would handle it, but not going to suggest it to you, because it means getting a little physical.
There has to be a noise ordnance in place and the Sheriff is not doing his job. I would suggest a simple call from your Attorney to the Sheriff about formal action if nothing is done, and I would be very surprised if you did not see a different attitude from the Sheriff real quick.
Hi Ann, Do these people rent or do they own? If they rent have you talked to the landlord (not that it always helps). Are they maintaining the property well? (probably not) How long have they been there? And how long has this been going on? Did it just recently start with the new arrival of someone in the house? Does the landlord know? - could be noncomplying with the lease. This has got to be an incredibly frustrating situation for you. No one should have to deal with a situation such as this one.
Stephen,
Unfortunately, I do not think they would do it.
Ann
Coleen,
Sounds like the neighbors that lived next to my cousin in Florida.
Why are people so inconsiderate? I would never presume to keep someone awake or threaten them with physical harm for no reason.
Glad to hear yours moved on. Thanks for sharing.
Ann
Cheryl,
Oh my...that would be a good one. I think I would have to leave. ;-)
Ann
Don,
It is a good idea.
Ann
George,
A different attitude would be great. When they were here Saturday at 3 a.m. I told them I would be willing to talk to the neighbors with them present. Their comment was they did not want to get in the middle of it. I said," You are peace officers, you are supposed to keep the peace and you are not doing your job."
It was another sleepless weekend.
Ann
Sandy,
They do not rent. They own the house. They seem to have alcohol issues.
I am going to install some cameras since they have threatened to throw flaming bags of dog poo at my house.
They are so ........
Ann
Ann, time to stop playing nice, I would make that call to my Attorney. The Mayor's office is also a good option especially if they are up for re-election in November.
Sounds like it's time to mow your yard at 7 am after the big parties. :)
George,
Now how did you know I usually play nice with others??
Ann
Ann, because you are a nice person, and they would not be doing this to you unless they thought that they could get away with it.
That sounds horrible. Maybe you could get all the other neighbors involved too and intervene? Wishing you some rest.
April,
Yes, mowing early in the day is a good idea...
Ann
George,
I am not so nice at 3 am.....
Ann
Oliver,
The other neighbors are old and most are hard of hearing and they think it will do no good to join with me but I am in the process of being persuasive.....
Ann
