The Wave of the Future in Banking

The Wave of the Future in Banking was quite a shock to me when I entered the new credit union in my area.  I walked in and filled out my deposit/withdrawal slip then I walked over to the information desk to ask, Where do I go now?  Look closely at the photo:

banking future

There were no tellers to be found.  A small screen with a person was the only thing at the kiosk.  It was like something out of the Jetsons.  Of course, my daughter had no idea what I was talking about but none the less, it was strange.  The person on the screen said the credit union set up the lobby this way to protect the tellers from robberies.  I could see the point but what a shock to me.

I hope you walked back out and found a bank with a human

Barry,

I was tempted but it was such an enlightening experience and I needed some money!

We had the same thing in Houston. I walked out and found a human to talk to.

Ann, I'm hoping this is a good.  What happens if the transaction is wrong?

I'm going to look into that for my REO tours in bad neighborhoods

Ann,

I think you are right. We used to have our friendly banker that we could approach about any financial matter or venture. Now, they'd prefer we just send in our money and not bother them. :)

Ann, I have not seen that done around here yet, but if it is being done there I am sure it will not be long before we see it as well.

Hummm if I know what you are talking about when you say the Jetsons, does that me there is something wrong with me? :) :) :)

I don't mind the idea just the reason for it. If it was done for productivity and to provide the customer with faster and better service that would be great...but because there is a need to keep the tellers, that's just scary.

Love the safety aspect of this concept!  No one needs to risk their life while working and this adds yet another layer of protection for the teller.  Marti

Hi Ann, I hadn't yet seen this. However, I remember working in the banking industry for over 10 years, back in the 1980's and back then, we didn't have any protection at all.  One day a man walked in, walked straight past my desk, after I greeted him. He handed the teller a note, asking for all the money in her teller drawer.

Terry,

Unfortunately, I did not have the time to do that...

Tony,

It is just like going to the drive through.  If it is wrong, they will fix it.

Ann, wow, haven't seen that here. Perhaps BOA will do it, if any bank will.

Yes, unfortunately, it does mean you are strange...;-)

Kathy,

The service was not any faster but I am sure the teller could handle more than one transaction at a time like with the drive up.  I am not sure safety is really the reason for it....

Marti,

Yes, it does add protection but it also seems impersonal.

Amazing how the futuristic images of our minds and imaginations are becoming reality :)  I haven't seen these kiosks but am sure I will someday.

It is kind of bizarre!  I hope Star Trek and the Stars Wars stuff is not next!

There is a credit union in Florissant that has the same set up.  The tellers are on video screens.  There was a receptionist and a loan office at the branch and no one else.  I like real tellers who know my name - like at the Private Bank or the old Central West End Bank (now Pulaski).  However, the credit union in Florissant had a play area for kids, video games and plasma TVs.  It was a different experience - but the credit union's customers seemed to love it.  I was just picking up a check - so everyone was happy.

Ryan,

Sounds like a nice place but I do like to interact with something other than a computer screen.

Ann,

Next thing you know they can save building on the site and just use an ATM kiosk in the parking lot. :)

I might just skip the lobby and do that next time...;-)
